when people ask me what I learned from SFAF

Today I spent hours trying to figure out what gifts to give to what kids, what toys are ok for a baby so that it doesn't chew off the nose of a teddy bear. It was a nightmare. Sitting in the middle of bags and bags of little race cars, barbie dolls, and figurines, I just wanted to take a nap.

And in the middle of all this, I had to remember one thing: take out the CD's, the DVD's, and the video games. Not because they are inappropriate. It's just that ... not every kid has a CD, DVD, or PS2 player.

And on top of that, I remember, that there's a 50 percent chance that these kids are also HIV positive.

This I know for sure: I am in the lap of luxury and fortune.

keeping awake

I'm going to attempt to write this post in a coherent manner, instead of my usual sporadic splurges of ink. Here goes:

Finals season -- I want to say that it's like bee season but I'm not sure what bee seasons is. Sounds nice, though, doesn't it? It's not so bad this year, I suppose. One final down already and tomorrow another will be wiped off the slate. I'm not sure how many of these finals seasons I can take without a hiatus. Good thing I'm taking a break before higher education, right?

The weather is violent, and I wonder where that violence is coming from. I can hardly assess my wardrobe and it's compatibility with the moods of the weather. Then again, I've survived winters before here with the same clothes. I still wonder, though, as I step out of the house and nearly break my door trying to close it.

You know what's nice about home? The cushions. It's amazing how many cushions we have everywhere and how I actually have the leisure to fall into them. That, and my tangerine tree. Shhhh, we don't have that big of a harvest this year so we're keeping it on the down low.

freezing cold

I'm eating a grilled chicken salad right now, and I had a realization that I have to share.

So.

Did you know that the salad, made by La Vals, are exactly the same ingredients they put on their pizzas? It's like one day, the Italians got sick of cold crisp leaves and decided to toss everything on a piece of bread and juice it up with tomatoes and cheese. And heat. heat is important.

God, what a great way to do business.
